Memorial Day represents a time for the nation to pause, remember and honor the service of deceased Veterans and military members who died on active duty. While there are many events to honor those who died while on active duty both locally and nationally for Memorial day, its roots extend back to the 1860’s. Memorial day was not officially proclaimed until 1868 and did not become a federal holiday until 1971. Originally Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day because loved ones and comrades decorated the graves of the fallen to remember them. Memorial Day is always held on the last Monday in May and observed on a national level by having a moment of silence at 3PM local time. If you’re like my family, you will be enjoying this extended weekend from your own backyard. I know many of my friends and family will be doing activities such as camping, going to the beach, hosting picnics and backyard barbecues.

Some other common activities for this long weekend include shopping, family gatherings, fireworks and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day Volunteers will often place American flags on each grave site at the national cemeteries to honor those who died while in military service.

Here are a few other local events that may interest you as well:
